4 Signs of an Ineffective Scam Diet That Every Athlete Should Know
As the official caterers of the Philadelphia Soul and the Temple University Owls, Village Catering understands that athletes need to keep their bodies in top shape if they want to perform their best on the field. If you’re looking to improve your performance by slimming down, the best place to start is in the kitchen. Unfortunately, there are a number of scam diets and fly-by-night “gurus” offering meal plans that are more harmful than they are helpful. Before you jump on a new diet, keep your eyes peeled for these four signs of a scam:
- Claiming that they will teach you how to convert fat into muscle. Unfortunately, it’s physiologically impossible to convert fat into muscle, since both materials are made of fundamentally different compounds and substances. You’ll need to break down fat and build muscle individually if you want to change your physique!
- Claiming to be able to “spot reduce” fat. It’s also impossible to remove fat from specific areas of your body—beware of diets that claim to be able to burn fat from targeted areas like your stomach or thighs.
- Claiming to use “magical” language or techniques. Be cautious of diets that claim to use seemingly magical thinking or vague concepts to encourage weight-loss. Words and phrases like “toxins,” “internal cleansing” and “negative calorie foods” are typically dead giveaways that a diet is not scientifically-based.
- Claiming to have a “secret” weight-loss technique. If your diet of choice claims to have a “secret” that industry professionals have been suppressing from the public, be very skeptical. This is usually a sign that someone is more interested in selling you a book than helping you lose weight.
